Division of marital property in a divorce settlement

Division of marital property in divorce does not need to be like a game of chess!
Much of the anxiety surrounding asset division during a divorce comes from a place of uncertainty and fear. Once disputes concerning the nature of the property have been resolved the process of dividing assets and debts should be rather straightforward.
Often our initial draft of a marital asset worksheet will show that one party owes the other an amount of money to equalize things. This can be accomplished in one of two ways.
First, the owing party can simply pay the amount of money owed in cash in one lump sum or over time, as may be agreed. This situation is common where one party must refinance a home in order to purchase their spouse's interest. See: Settlyd's Cash to Balance feature.
Second, the owing party may take on more debt or pay out a greater share of an asset to equalize things. Settlyd's Asset Division Worksheet is an efficient and powerful tool for doing exactly this kind of analysis.
In addition to having a good worksheet, all of the data needs too be accurate and easily verifiable. I've found this to be the best way to keep disagreements to a minimum!
